Membership

There are four categories of Member in the Society:

Full (voting) membership is open to fully qualified veterinary surgeons registered with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS). The Society will also consider applications from overseas veterinarians holding a degree registrable with RCVS

Associate (non-voting) membership is open to appropriately qualified non-veterinarians with an interest in fish health.

The Annual retention fee for both Full and Associate Members is £60 (at July 2009) payable on 1st January of each year. Applicants joining at other times of the year pay pro-rata for the remainder of the subscription year (January-December) in which they join.

Student (non-voting) membership is open to veterinary students. They pay no fee until they graduate, at which point they may become full members if they so wish.

Life (non-voting) membership is awarded at the discretion of the Society at an AGM.

Applications for membership are invited using the Registrations link on the right. All applications are reviewed by the Committee for acceptance or rejection.

Principle Activities

The Fish Veterinary Society is now a Specialist (non-territorial) Division of the British Veterinary Association and engages in a wide range of activities, including:cichlids

  • holding two scientific meetings per year, at which a number of invited speakers present papers on a range of fish-related subjects
  • publishing the Fish Veterinary Journal, which contains scientific papers, short communications and proceedings of scientific and other meetings.
  • representing members' and FVS interests to public bodies, government departments, industry, etc.
  • publishing policy documents to help its members and others understand the veterinary viewpoint on subjects relating to fish health and welfare
  • acting as a forum for discussion
  • maintaining a web site to enable the more rapid spread of information
